Our Clients

Our advisors help a diverse group of clients of varying age, professions, situations, and needs. In addition, each of our advisors has experience and focused knowledge in select areas. We are experienced and knowledgeable in the following fields and bring a well-rounded perspective that allows us to provide advice on specific issues and options that many of our clients face:

Registered Nurses & Highly Skilled Hospital Professionals

  • We comprehend how your career trajectory in a hospital is often unique, both in terms of flexibility of schedule and the nature of your work and take the potential for per diem work or a gradual retirement into account in our planning.

  • As a highly paid hourly worker with the flexibility to take on overtime or extra vacation, your pay can fluctuate. We have significant experience working with clients in this situation and making sure that both your current cash flow and your long term plans accommodate this flexibility and the possibility of fluctuating pay.

  • We know the pension options and benefits details of many of the Bay Area’s largest hospital-based employers and understand how the structure of hospital benefits can translate from region to region.

  • Our planners have years of experience and are well versed in 403(b), 457(b), 401(k), and 401(a) options. As a hospital employee, you are likely to have a very different set of retirement savings options than those in other lines of work. These plans often offer features such as the ability to take early withdrawals without penalty or contribute more than the usual limits after a long period of employment. We have the expertise to guide you through these decisions rather than treating your options like any other 401(k).

Firefighters & Police

We know that your situation is often unique and your retirement plan contains components such as:

  • Early Retirement (age 55 or even sooner), which may include a second phase such as consulting work, opening a business, or extended travel.

  • Significant pension monies that often are sufficient to meet household income needs when supplemented by other income sources, such as a spouse’s social security or pension

  • With a traditional defined benefit plan to cover most necessary spending, retirement assets (such as 457 plans or IRAs) may have been accumulated with an eye towards discretionary spending or other specific goals.

  • You may expect a shorter life expectancy due to the rigors of your career. We make sure to look at how that impacts your retirement projection as well as that of your spouse or any other survivors.

  • We are familiar with public safety pension plans, including retirement due to disability or injury on duty, and the tax implications for both you and a surviving spouse

  • Our planners are familiar with the specifics of 457(b) plans used for the public sector and how this money may be used to buy back years of service in your CalPERS pension and, when a buyback is an option, perform detailed cost/benefit analysis in order to determine what option makes the most sense for you and your family.

  • Deep familiarity with how 457 governmental plan rules differ from 401(k) rules and when it does and doesn’t advantage you to move this money to an IRA.

Public Service Employees

  • We are familiar with public employee pension plans (such as PERS, FERS, and STRS) and the unique benefits that retiring from public employment might provide.

  • Our focus on holistic analysis (rather than just investments) means that we look at options such as pension buybacks, single life vs. joint payouts, and other options specific to pensioned employees.

  • Our expertise in public Deferred Compensation plans, such as 457(b) plans and the Federal TSP, means that we understand your unique options rather than treating your retirement account like any other 401(k) – and know when moving to an IRA might provide an advantage or disadvantage to you.

  • We know the ways that government pensions can interact with the social security system for both you and a spouse and how to make sure that we are correctly calculating any offset as well as making sure you are able to claim all benefits which you are entitled to.

Freelancers & Business Owners

  • Our experience working with other people like you gives us the ability to help look at the financial feasibility of taking a dream and making it into a career

  • We understand the financial issues related to different business structures, such as incorporating or forming an LLC

  • We help you make decisions around the choices small business owners face, including healthcare, tax issues, and retirement savings plans

  • Through thorough planning, we help ensure that their business is prepared to survive their sudden absence, or that of a key employee

  • Our focus on cash flow and comprehensive planning means that we help analyze current and future cash flow and help with your business’s financial plans

  • As your business grows, we can help you set up competitive benefit structures for top employees

  • As you approach retirement, we can help you develop a succession plan that allows you to utilize the value they have created to fund retirement or a new venture

Divorced Spouse & Widows

  • We have the experience and perspective to help provide support through these changes, understand the emotional and technical challenges involved, and do the work necessary to help answer the question: “where do I go from here?”

  • Our holistic analysis helps clarify where you are, where you want to be, and what adjustments might be necessary to get there, recognizing that your finances are only one part of your life as a whole.

  • We coordinate and collaborate with your other advisors, such as attorneys and accountants, helping to manage your transition period and update your old plans with new ones. We can also help connect you with qualified specialists when necessary.

  • We help determine how comfortable you are with risk and help position your assets to meet your goals – all while making sure you understand and feel empowered to manage your own financial destiny.

Young Professionals

  • We charge planning fees which enable us to provide objective, detailed analysis even for those who are only beginning to accumulate assets.

  • Our specialists have a deep familiarity with the issues that matter to early and mid-career professionals, such as student loans, buying a new home, and college savings.

  • Our planners work with our clients to understand and maximize their cash flow now as well as make sure that you are prepared for disruptions that may impact your income and/or expenses in the future.

  • We help clients with the analysis necessary to determine which goals should be targeted first and which can be deferred until later.

  • Many times, “goals” for retirement and other life events many, many years down the line are difficult to define. We work with our younger clients to build flexibility and freedom into their plans instead, allowing them to feel that wherever life takes them, they will be financially prepared and will have a partner who can help them adjust and adapt their plan over time.
